December 2018 Message from the NCSM President, Connie Schrock

Best Wishes for the New Year!

As we enter in to our winter break, I want to wish you the very best for the new year. I hope you are able to use this well-deserved time to recharge. It is not only teachers and students that need a break, our mathematics leaders need one as well.

I encourage you to take this time to do what you enjoy, what you don't have time for during the fast-paced workdays.  I know you will return ready to face another year of successes and challenges.

And, thank you for all you do for our teachers and our students. NCSM wants to work with you throughout the year to help you as you continue to lead in mathematics.

The information in this newsletter can help you as you persevere in your work leading for excellence in mathematics teaching and learning. Consider joining us at the annual NCSM meeting in San Diego for rejuvenation, networking, learning, and fun! See the article in the left column for more information about our annual conference.

Again, best wishes for the new year. I will see you in San Diego in April!

Connie Schrock, NCSM president

The Kay Gilliland Equity Lecture Award Winner Announced

NCSM is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2019 Kay Gilliland Award is Dr. Linda Fulmore

Dr. Fulmore has worked to ensure equity in mathematics education for all children for as long as she can remember. Her professional teaching career began in Fort Wayne, Indiana and continued in Arizona where she taught secondary school mathematics in the Phoenix Union High School District. During this time, she was recognized as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year two years in a row at Central High School.

She later became a school and district administrator before beginning a second career as mathematics education consultant in schools and districts throughout the United States. As a consultant, she helped teachers improve instruction, develop better assessments and use data more effectively. She states: “Often, I have been the only voice for equity in the room and have learned to never miss an opportunity to stand up for what’s right and what’s fair.”

Her contributions to the profession include ten years on the NCSM Board in various roles including Positions Papers Editor for seven years. She chaired the Achievement Gap Task Force and served on regional and national program committees for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She additionally served four years on the Mathematics Education Trust Board and currently is the secretary of the Benjamin Banneker Association and Treasurer of TODOS Mathematics for all. In 2017, Dr. Fulmore was honored to receive the Arizona Golden Apple Leadership Award in Mathematics Education.

As the 2019 recipient of the Kay Gilliland Award, Linda will deliver the Kay Gilliland Equity Lecture titled "Mathematics Leaders 'Answering the Call' for Educational Change" at the 51st NCSM Annual Conference in San Diego, April 1-3, 2019.

More information about the Kay Gilliland Equity Lecture Award as well as past winners can be found HERE.

Again, we congratulate Dr. Linda Fulmore on being selected as the 2019 Kay Gilliland Equity Lecture Award.

From Irma Cruz, NCSM Awards Chair
