Expanding Access to the Journal for Mathematics Education Leadership
|
I am thrilled to announce to our membership—the BOLD mathematics education leaders of NCSM—that one of our most exciting resources is now more accessible!
The Journal for Mathematics Education Leadership (JMEL), published by NCSM, connects current research to practice on topics related to mathematics education leadership.
Until this month, JMEL was considered a benefit for NCSM members only. We are now choosing to make JMEL a benefit to the larger community of leaders in mathematics education. The NCSM board voted to make JMEL available to the public as we anticipate it will increase the positive impact from this incredible resource for both members AND potential members!
JMEL has been and will continue to be an amazing resource for the members of NCSM. Article topics include:
- empirical case studies and lessons learned from mathematics education leadership in schools, districts, states, regions, or provinces;
- empirical research reports with implications for mathematics education leaders;
- professional development efforts including how these efforts are situated in the larger context of professional development and implications for leadership practice; and
- program descriptions of leadership focused implementation of core practices.
Benefits of Open Access
For many years as a membership benefit, the journal was posted on the NCSM members-only website, where each member could log-in and access every edition of the journal. However, the technology solutions available for searching the journal by keywords or author were extremely limited due to being on the section of the website that required that log-in. Making the journal public means our members will have greater access to our own journal. The new location on the website will allow for further customization and functionality, and we are already beginning that work to ensure keyword or author searches are available soon.
|
Making JMEL open access also makes it a community resource, providing valuable research and publications from NCSM members to mathematics education leaders across the continent. With JMEL available only on our members-only site, JMEL articles were not able to show up in results lists when searching on Google Scholar or other search engines. Leaders who aren’t familiar with NCSM may never have even known we had a journal where they should look for information!
We are working to make JMEL itself more visible on Google Scholar, but so that each individual JMEL article published since 2004 (over 100!) can be more easily found. This broadens the readership of these important materials to include teachers and leaders who did not know about NCSM and who may not have regular access to paid journals where recent research appears.
The increased access is incredibly important to NCSM members who are authors and/or potential authors of journal articles. JMEL contributors work hard to implement programs and/or conduct research, and then put tremendous effort into writing up their findings so that they can share what they have learned with other leaders. With this change, their work will be accessible to more people. With readership increase, the likelihood of positive impact of their learnings is increased, benefitting more schools, educators, and students.
|
We are proud to undertake these changes which will increase the equity and impact of JMEL. It also provides a connection point for those who are not familiar with NCSM to our network of supportive leaders and other resources they might access if they choose to join.
Supporting BOLD leadership
NCSM’s mission is to equip and empower a diverse education community to engage in leadership that supports, sustains, and inspires high quality mathematics teaching and learning every day for each and every learner. JMEL is a resource that has great potential to support growth for math leaders of all experience levels and across geographical regions, to provide insight and research-based ideas for teaching, learning and leading, and connect emerging leaders and potential members to NCSM. We hope that with this expansion of access, that potential is met and our impact amplified!
If you haven’t lately, take a minute to peruse the 34 editions of JMEL available online. Also, as a member of NCSM, you are a BOLD leader doing great things... so I hope you will consider sharing about your work with the larger community of mathematics education leaders! If you are conducting research or implementing new approaches and programs in your system, please consider sharing your efforts and learning with our network! Submissions are always welcome, and the JMEL Co-editors would love to talk with you about what it takes to publish an article. Please contact them with any questions or interest right away!

New from AMTE
The AMTE Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education: Reflection on Past, Present and Future - Paving the Way for the Future of Mathematics Teacher Education
This new volume (Volume 5) is a critical and timely resource that paves the way and guides the future of mathematics teacher education. The collection of work in this AMTE Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education reflects on research and what we know about how best to prepare and support both mathematics teachers and mathematics teacher educators and presents what is happening in the field. Examples included in the 22 chapters highlight how we are preparing teachers across multiple contexts (e.g., within district, in content courses for the major) and grade ranges (K-20+) and all chapters highlight relevant connections to the AMTE Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics. Most importantly, this volume explores what we do not yet fully understand and where we are going. In essence, it considers how we can move the field forward. Authors include K-12 teachers, school administrators, district leaders, graduate students, higher education faculty, and professional development facilitators.
