OF INTEREST TO OUR MEMBERS:

Special Call for Manuscripts: Voices from the Field

The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators' publication Connections is seeking brief manuscripts on field experiences in mathematics teacher education during this time of COVID-19, with a specific focus on current challenges, responses, and/or lessons learned.

Given the differing impacts of and responses to COVID-19 in states, universities, and PreK-12 schools, this exchange of ideas allows us to learn from one another in varying contexts in a timely way.

Submissions should be no longer than 6 pages and will undergo a blind review. Manuscripts submitted by October 26th will be considered for the upcoming Winter 2020 issue, and those received after this date may need to be considered for the Spring 2021 issue.

Mona Toncheff

October 2020 Message from the NCSM President, Mona Toncheff

How do you fill your cup?

Imagine a full cup of your coffee, tea or favorite morning beverage. How does that full cup make you feel as you start your day? Now imagine that same cup after having been knocked over and drained of some or all of its liquid. Suddenly, the feeling changes.

When times are tough, difficult, challenging or stressful your full cup might feel depleted or even empty. However, the same cup being slowly filled with experiences that are inspiring, innovative, and bring you joy leave your cup full again.

When there are difficult decisions to be made, too many upcoming deadlines, or competing professional obligations, mathematics leader may feel overwhelmed or like they are running on empty.  When I experience these feelings, I know it is time to “refill my cup.” Time with family, down time, and exercise always help. This past week, spending time with my NCSM family has done the trick.

Throughout the past two weeks, the NCSM board has been meeting virtually for the fall board meeting. Board members serving on each Initiative and Standing Committee are working to model what it means to be innovative leaders. Given the unique circumstances that 2020 has provided, the committees are working overtime to meet NCSM’s mission to, “equip and empower a diverse education community to engage in leadership that supports, sustains, and inspires high quality mathematics teaching and learning every day for each and every learner.”

In addition to the NCSM board meeting, I also had the pleasure of working with the NCSM professional learning directors, Georgina Rivera and Jenny Novak, and 110+ mathematics leaders from one of our affiliates this week. It was inspiring to listen to the open and honest reflection from the mathematics leaders regarding how to best support students and the teachers/leaders they serve.  If you are also looking for inspiration, NCSM is offering two virtual winter seminars November 9, 2020 and February 8, 2021. More information can be found HERE.  Come join Gina, Jenny and I on your bold leadership journey.

Spending time with the NCSM board and the mathematics leaders this week (even though it had to be virtual) has filled my cup and brought joy to my daily work. I look forward to sharing the resources and products that result from the NCSM board meeting and professional development experiences with members in the upcoming months. If you feel like you cup is low, consider how NCSM can be part of your strategy to fill it again.  Together we can find ways to challenge and support each other to keep our cups full.
